Hi! I’m Nicole.
I’m the main face behind NK Creative Studios.
I figured it was about time that I formally introduce myself on here.
So, here I am (in my white on white kitchen)! It’s nice to (virtually) meet you!
Here’s a little bit about me:
- My name is Nicole Kathleen Wiegelmann (formerly Smith).
- The NK in NK Creative Studios stands for Nicole Kathleen.
- I am 27 years old.
- I have been married to my best friend, Alex, since 2016.
- I am a proud fur mama. I have 2 beautiful dogs.
- I love binge-watching TV series but rarely watch any movies.
- I start every day with a hot cup of coffee.
- I can be extremely indecisive.
- I am a very loyal friend.
- I hate doing laundry, but it feels so good when it’s done.
- I want to travel more (a lot more) before having kids.
- In 2011, I starting having vision-related health issues. I will never take vision for granted again … and I’m so grateful that I never lost mine, and could continue doing what I love! I hope to do a post about this soon.
Curious about my education?
I know there are a lot of amazing photographers in the Ottawa area who are self-taught and I think that is incredible! So good for each and every one of them for learning something like photography on their own. It takes courage and discipline to teach yourself something and then turn it into a successful business!
I am not one of them.
I studied videography, photography and web design for a collective 6+ years. I am proud of my studies and believe it has played a role in who I am as a person and as a photographer.
My love for art started in elementary school, but it wasn’t until my 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Kathy Holvey, told me that I should seriously consider a career in an art-related field.
I went into high school knowing that my forte was in the arts, so I took as many art classes as possible (I skipped pottery and stuck to the more media-related arts like photography, comtech (video/animation), etc). I had some incredible teachers that really helped me realize my passions for photography, film and media. [A special thank you to Mr. Kesner, Mr. Barnabe and Mr. Jackson].
At first, I decided that I wanted to study videography at Ryerson University. After 2 years of studies in Downtown Toronto, I realized my true passion was photography. So, I decided to come back to Ottawa halfway through my BFA degree to study at Algonquin College.
I took the 2-year Photography course at Algonquin College and learned more than I ever thought possible. I had some of the most incredible professors who have shaped me and my photography, especially Denine Wrixon. [Denine: if you are reading this … thank you for everything.]
In the summer between first and second year of the Photography program, I completed the Web Design Certificate program through Algonquin College. (Yes, I was that 20-something girl spending her summer weekends in class.)
After graduating the Photography course in 2014, I went on to get my Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Photography, through the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. This program was very self-guided / self-taught. It taught me a lot about myself … like how much I dislike writing 6,000 word thesis papers. 🙂
In summary… I did a lot of schooling!
But, I honestly loved school.
I loved every minute of it!
It got me to where I am today… owning my own successful full-time photography & web design business!
I plan to share images I created throughout College in a few weeks, but until then, here is a post I did showcasing some I created during BA studies.
Alright, now for the rest of the team!
Second Shooter / Assistant at NK Creative Studios.
Angelika joined the team about a year ago, shortly after she signed up for my mentorship program. She showed serious promise and potential, so I just had to scoop her up before someone else did – haha!! I couldn’t be happier to have her as part of my business! Not only is she an amazing second shooter & photography assistant, she’s also a stunning mama to 2 beautiful kids.
My time with Nicole, working as part of the NK Creative Studios team, has been surreal. Not only have I been able to learn so much from such a talented photographer, I’ve met so many incredible families and couples. I love tagging along to family sessions and weddings with Nicole! We always have a blast capturing these special moments in people’s lives and I learn something new with every shoot we do!~ Angelika
Technical Support & Back End Web Developer at NK Creative Studios.
Not only is Alex my husband, he’s also a very important member of the NK Creative Studios team. Alex is our IT department and takes care of a lot of technology related work behind-the-scenes, mainly with the web design portion of the business. He is my go-to when I have any tech issues… and he does all of the back end work for web design clients. He has incredible patience … which is something I lack … so I am incredibly happy to have him as part of my business.
Maker / Crafter at NK Creative Studios.
Dawn is not only the maker / crafter of NK Creative Studios, but she is also my mom! She is very talented and artistic, and has made many props / backdrops for my business. She made the hanging hearts for our Valentine’s Day mini sessions, as well as helped me build the beautiful floral backdrop for our Spring and Mommy & Me mini sessions. Just waiting for her to retire so she can make cool things for the business full time … maybe not full time, but that would be so awesome!
Branch Manager / Security Guard at NK Creative Studios.
Max is my eldest fur-baby. He is a beautiful 7 year old German Shepherd. He is NK Creative Studios’ security guard… and he takes his job VERY seriously. If you come in for a studio session, he will be the one who is barking behind closed doors. He sounds scary but once he’s decided you are not going to hurt his humans, he warms up pretty quickly (after severally months).
Assistant to the Branch Manager / Morale Manager at NK Creative Studios.
Piper is my youngest fur-baby. She is a quirky 2 year old Boxador (Boxer / Lab Mix). Piper’s main job at NK Creative Studios is her position as “Morale Manager”, which she is very good at. As Morale Manager, Piper is in charge of ensuring all staff and clientele are happy (and will give kisses to anyone and everyone she is allowed to meet). And yes, her other position “Assistant to the Branch Manager” is indeed a reference to The Office.
